GMA TO SPEAK AT NAFFAA CONFAB NEXT MONTH

CHICAGO – Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will be one of the keynote speakers at the 8th NaFFAA National Empowerment Conference from Sept. 26-28 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle, Washington, according to National NaFFAA Chair Alma Quintans Kern.
Fayette Man Arrested for Rape

Checking news out of Seneca County, sheriff's deputies charged a Fayette man with having sex with an Ohio juvenile he met on the Internet. Ray Keefer, 50, is charged with three counts of rape and being a fugitive from justice.

State to Audit Thruway Gas Prices

ALBANY, N.Y. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced he will audit gas prices on the New York State Thruway after concerns they may be overcharging motorists.
Webster Walgreens Opens

The nation's largest retail pharmacy chain opened its newest store in the busy retail center of Webster. Walgreens is now open at the corner of Ridge and Holt Roads. Walgreens management said it's looking at ways to save customers time; a new feature is an online pharmacy.
Bassinet Warning Issued

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning about a Pennsyvania company's baby bassinets. It comes after two babies were trapped and strangled in the product. The commission says infants can slip through the bars of Simplicity, Incorporated's "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets.

- Milestone reached in search for deafness cure - New Scientist: "A neurobiologist who is profoundly hard of hearing has developed an experimental gene therapy that generates the type of cells that are damaged or missing in deaf animals. Mice embryos were injected with a key developmental gene that led to the production of ear cells that convey sounds to the brain ? a scientific first. ... Milestone though it may be, the advance represents only an incremental step in the search for a treatment to human hearing loss, says lead author John Brigande of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. "We' re really far away from a cure for deafness," ; says Brigande, who began losing his own hearing aged 10 and now hears nothing out of his left ear and only poorly out of his right."

- Mad Science: Genetically-En gineered Hairs Improve the Human Ear: At birth, humans have about 30,000 hair cells, which can be damaged by infections, ageing, genetic diseases, loud noise or treatment with certain drugs. In most cases, damaged hair cells do not regrow in mature humans. But recent research has kindled hope that nerve deafness may one day be curable. A team of scientists led by John Brigande at the Oregon Health and Science University, in Portland showed that implanting a gene known as Atoh1 into the inner ear of a mouse embryo coaxed non-sensory cells to become hair cells.
