• DNS and the resolver function: OK. So you've been wondering what this essay is really about. This text is meant for network programmers that wish to understand a little more about the workings of the DNS interface in the nix environment, and most probably in WinSock as well (but with different headers, etc..) The problem lies in the fact that there aren't that many functions to deal with DNS queries of any kind. There are the two basic functions to do an A query and a PTR query. One asks the DNS to convert an IP address to a host name, which is a human readable string (with dots of course heh), and the other is a request to the DNS server to convert an address (host name) to an IP address, which is basically a 4 byte value.
